Organic Clothing - A Long Term Choice
To have a positive long-term impact on the environment, most consumers realize that choices in food, clothing, shelter and transportation can make a difference. Trends in all these categories indicate that we're making wiser, long-term choices. What if you could make a choice that would reduce your ecological footprint on Earth? And what if, at the same time, you found that that choice was not only better for the earth, but much more luxurious and comfortable?
Better, Longer Lasting Apparel
Many of you are interested in better, more long-lasting things. We've brought together the finest cotton in America, and perhaps - the world - with the most environmentally sensitive cotton growing and fabric producing practices available.
Why Organic Cotton?
Conventional cotton farming is quite environmentally destructive, taking a huge toll on the air, water and soil where it is grown. Since it takes over a pound of pesticides and unnecessary chemicals to make one T-shirt and a pair of jeans, a change to organic cotton can make a big impact. When you make the connection between fabrics and cottonseed oil, used to make margarine, fry potato chips or make cattle feed, you can see why it might be important to keep pesticides out of your clothing and the food chain. Organic farmers find alternatives to chemically dependent farming practices, starting with the soil. They use cover crops, crop rotation and compost to keep the soil healthy and productive. They control weeds using innovative techniques rather than applying herbicides. They control insects by planting trap crops and by introducing beneficial insects to fields. Instead of killing or defoliating cotton plants to harvest the cotton, cotton farmers use a combination of natural interventions to get the cotton ready to pick. It's a bit labor intensive, but so worth it!
Why Pima is so Spectacular!
Every bit as soft as silk, Pima cotton is the name of a type of cotton grown in the United States, Australia and Peru and in limited locations elsewhere in the world. Pima is extra-long-fiber cotton and is counted among the longest fiber lengths on the planet. It is stronger, more uniform, more lustrous and smoother than regular cotton. The resulting fabric is finer and more durable, luxurious fabric that is worth the investment!
Processing without Harsh Chemicals
The cotton we use is not processed with chlorine bleach, heavy metals or formaldehyde used in conventional cotton processing. So, no environmental implications and no weakening the fibers! Certified organically grown cotton is better for the soil, better for the environment, and is stronger, softer, purer, cozier and more comfortable!
Made in America
Long, strong Pima is premium cotton used in spinning finer-count yarns. We had our organic cotton combed and ring spun to increase its luster using a Swiss processor renowned for high-quality yarn. The fabrics were knit in North Carolina, then cut and sewn in Florida. We turned a softer, finer and more luxurious fabric into the “cushiest” sleepwear imaginable!
American Pima Cotton, Egyptian Cotton and our Custom-made Fabrics
American long fiber cottonseed originated in the Sea Islands in the Carolinas. Some of this Sea Island cotton was crossed with Egyptian cotton to create Pima cotton. Though marketing has made Egyptian cotton seem like the gold standard in elegant cotton fabric, you'd be surprised to learn that "Egyptian Cotton" is not always synonymous with the longest fiber cotton. Fine count yarn spinners use Pima because it is assuredly extra long fiber. Pima yarn produces fabrics that are 50% stronger than other cotton varieties. We've had fine gauge Pima yarn knit into a lofty Interlock and a silky Pointelle. We've also made sleepwear at moderate price points out of organic, combed, ringspun cotton that is not Pima. It is also quite soft and comes in a wide rib knit and a generous Pointelle.
